This is an arrangement of the “funeral hymn” in the LDS hymnal that I recently wrote at the request of the wonderful people with whom I’d been staying, Dave and Marilyn Every. I wrote it for their son, and my friend, Tom Every, to sing in the recent Father’s Day Sacrament Meeting. This arrangement utilizes the first, second, and fourth verses of the hymn which shy away from the funeral message and speak more to those in our lives, both living and dead who help bring us closer to our Savior. Alternately, the third verse has been added as an alternate verse if being used for a funeral or memorial service.
It was written for a Baritone, but will also work for a mezzo (or even an alto) who is capable of soft, light sounds in the 2nd passagio range (up to an Eb). The singer should pay particularly close attention to the rhythm of the melody lines in the 2nd and third verses it differs from the one found in the hymnal.
The piano part is fairly simple, and allows for a great deal of interpretation in tempo and dynamics.
